About The Second City
It all started with children’s games. Rooted in the groundbreaking improvisational games of Viola Spolin, The Second City opened its doors on a snowy Chicago night in December of 1959, and a comedy revolution began.
Revered as “The Harvard of Comedy,” The Second City name is synonymous with the art of sketch comedy and improvisation. Our unique brand and creative process has cultivated the talents of such comedy heavyweights and legends as Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Stephen Colbert, Tina Fey, Steve Carell, Keegan-Michael Key, and Amy Poehler, just to name a few.
